Crying Shoulder

$100.00

Crying Shoulder is the work that changed the trajectory of my artistic practice. I always knew my work would center Black men and vulnerability, but as I deepened my practice, I began to notice that my most creative moments often emerged through grief.

After the loss of a dear friend, I realized grief would remain close to me. In paying attention to that closeness, I began to explore the many places grief lives, in the body, in memory, in love, and in absence. That exploration opened the door to greater works and a deeper understanding of how I move through my own emotions.

Crying Shoulder not only spearheaded my exhibition, When Snow Banks Were Mountains: An Exploration of Grief, but was itself born from loss. It is a piece that holds the spirit of what is gone, while reminding me that the crying shoulder remains alive each time I create, my crying shoulder.
